Lisa Callif Joins “Following Films” Podcast to Discuss Legal Representation for Independent Films
Lisa Callif recently appeared on an episode of the “Following Films” podcast to discuss legal representation for independent films. In the episode, Lisa shares the insights she’s gained from her vast experience representing independent producers and production companies in equity financing, production, distribution, fair use, and copyright matters.
During the course of her enlightening discussion with “Following Films” host Chris Maynard, Lisa emphasizes the distinction between the right of publicity and one’s right to create an expressive work, which comes up frequently in her practice at DCP when advising clients and reviewing scripts to avoid any legal ramifications. Still, she encourages prospective creatives to focus on their art and leave the legality to attorneys:
“I always tell people who are writing a script based on a true story not to censor themselves. Just send us what you got, tell us what you fictionalized, and we can go through it together,” she tells Chris.
The episode also features a closer look into Lisa’s career path and her desire to be involved in the arts. She initially began her career in the music industry, working at a hip-hop label in the 90s. She later went to law school to pursue a career in entertainment law. Her first job as a lawyer had her working with musicians like Snoop Dogg and Madonna before evolving her practice toward the representation of independent filmmakers and production companies.
