Lisa Callif recently conversed with The Hollywood Reporter about the legal complexities of street casting, a growing practice in the film industry in which non-actors are hired to boost the authenticity of a project. No Experience Necessary,” delves into the phenomenon that has been exemplified by several nominees for the new Academy Award for Achievement in Casting at the 2026 Oscars.
While casting nonprofessional actors can result in elevated realism and bring a fresh perspective to roles, it also comes with challenges. Lisa explains that complications can easily arise for new talent who lack dealmaking experience and representation from a lawyer, talent agency, or talent union. Because of this, many individuals are not adequately prepared to review and understand complex documents. As Lisa notes, “Maybe they sign a document, but do they really understand what it is that they’re getting into?”
