Chris Perez Speaks to The New York Times on Netflix’s Deal to Acquire Warner Bros. Discovery

Chris Perez recently spoke to The New York Times about Netflix’s $83 billion deal to acquire Warner Bros. Discovery and its sister streaming service, HBO Max. The deal has stunned Hollywood, raising both frustrations and concerns about what this will indicate for the entertainment industry and the local community as a whole.

The Netflix-Warner Bros. deal was announced on December 5th and triggered immediate conversation among film and TV professionals. Chris shares that since the news has broken, his phone has been buzzing nonstop, and it has been “literally the only thing people have been talking about.”

This deal is poised to have a significant impact on the entertainment industry, particularly on the independent and documentary film sector. Chris raises concerns over how it could result in an even smaller marketplace for independent and boundary-pushing films. He tells The New York Times, “Where you only have a few buyers, they’d rather have something that’s less risky, and you get safer, less controversial content and less experimentation.” He continues to warn, “Consolidation has the potential to kill creativity.”
