About “The Crash Reel”
USA, 2013, 90 min., Color
Kevin Pearce began snowboarding as a young boy and went pro by the time he was 18. A top pick for the 2010 Winter Olympics, Kevin suffered a severe traumatic brain injury from an accident while training on a half-pipe in Park City, Utah just a few weeks prior. In THE CRASH REEL, Oscar-nominated filmmaker Lucy Walker follows Kevin’s quick-rising career before the accident to his recovery and the long rehabilitation that drastically changed his life as well as his family’s.Through intimate interviews with Kevin, the supportive Pearce family and fellow snowboarders, including Kevin’s rival Shaun White, the documentary reveals an alarming trend of athletes putting themselves at risk for the sake of the extreme sports they love. Asking at what point are the boundaries pushed too far, THE CRASH REEL is a dynamic, compassionate and thought-provoking film any athlete, sports fan or person dedicated to success must see.
